Darlinghurst Dude Food:
Mr Crackles

Visited  on the 25th of May 2013

The way I became aware of Mr Crackles was coincidental. My friend and I were at work talking about food when he mentioned his love of pork crackling and how he wished there was a place where you could eat nothing but crispy, rich and flavourful pork crackling. To my surprise, such a place exists in Sydney! Not only does Mr. Crackles have pure pork crackling on the menu, there’s a whole menu of dude food at your fingertips.

Crackles classic: crisp skinned slow roast 5 spiced pork belly
served with Vietnamese salad in a roll ($10)

My friend opted for the crackles classic. The succulent pork belly had crisp skin sitting on top and was glistening with moisture . He said the pork itself was rich and had great flavour; the salad and bread helped balance the heaviness of the pork. Great dude food indeed!

Let me just confirm this for you as you wipe away the saliva currently dripping from your mouth. Yes, such beauty does exist! I don’t think this needs a big description at all; it’s everything you could hope for with any pork crackling. Crispy, flavourful and fat is completely rendered.

I also wanted to get the crackles classic but also wanted some variety and I couldn’t look past the lamb. The lamb was incredibly tender, juicy and flavourful. I loved the use of tahini as a condiment; it really added a great flavour and acidity which lifted all the flavours in the roll. The roll was not as rich as I expected it to be, leaving me with less regret after consuming this!

Chilli Cheese Fries ($7.5)

It wasn’t too long ago since I first went hunting for chilli cheese fries across Sydney. The first places I found offering this comfort food included snag stand and jazz city diner. I’ve also been asked on instagram how these compare to snag stand’s chilli fries. The shoestring fries were crispy, chilli was thick and rich and the cheese was slightly on top. These were some really rich fries (not that anyone would expect chilli cheese fries to be light)! In terms of flavour, at worst I would place these fries on par with snag stands if I had to make a comparison. However, in terms of value it knocks snag stand out of the ballpark; the flavour and portion you get for $7.5 is awesome!

Whether you’re looking for a really casual dinner when out with mates, craving dude food, love pork crackling or just want to try some great grub without denting the wallet in the city – look no further. Packed with flavour and friendly staff, Mr Crackles delivers.

For anyone who is having a late night out on a Friday or Saturday evening in the CBD, drop your KFC, Maccas and Hungry Jacks runs – Mr crackles is open till the early am.
